Website, Web App or Mobile App? How to Choose the Right Platform for Your Organisation
Many Bhutanese businesses, schools and organisations reach the same question when they plan their next digital step: should we build a website, a web application or a mobile app? Each option can work well. The right choice depends on who your users are, what they need to do, and how you plan to support the system over time.
Start with your users, not the technology
Before comparing platforms, write down who will use the system and where. Will customers browse your services from a laptop at the office, or will staff record data on a phone in the field? Do people need to use it every day, or only occasionally? Answers to these simple questions usually point clearly toward one approach.
When a website or web application is the better fit
- Wide reach: a web application opens in any browser, on desktop or mobile, with nothing to install.
- Easier updates: changes are made once on the server and every user sees them immediately.
- Search visibility: public web pages can be found through search engines, which helps people discover your organisation.
- Office and administrative work: dashboards, reporting, forms and back-office systems are often more comfortable on a larger screen.
When a mobile app makes more sense
- Frequent, on-the-go use: if users open the service many times a week, an app icon on their phone is convenient.
- Device features: apps can make fuller use of the camera, GPS, notifications and offline storage.
- Patchy connectivity: an app designed to work offline and sync later can help where network coverage is uneven.
- Push notifications: timely reminders and alerts can keep users engaged.
Consider a combined approach
Many projects do not need to choose just one. A common pattern is a web-based administration system for staff, connected to a mobile app for customers or field teams, both sharing the same secure backend. Responsive web design and progressive web apps can also give a mobile-friendly experience without building separate native apps from day one.
Questions to ask before you begin
- What problem are we solving, and how will we measure success?
- Which devices and browsers do our users actually have?
- Does the system need to work offline or integrate with other software?
- Who will maintain content, handle updates and look after security?
- How will user data be protected and backed up?
Plan for the long term
Launching is only the beginning. Operating systems update, security threats change, and users ask for new features. Budget time for maintenance, testing and security reviews, and choose technology your team or partner can support for years, not months.
